BORDER BAROQUE
Brand Identity/Print/Digital
Border Baroque an art exhibition and a series of oil paintings by street artist and painter Karlito Miller Espinosa also known as Mata Ruda. The collection frames the borderlands and its many contradiction through the dramatic illumination of the Baroque colonial spectacle.
The client was in search for a system that was unique and paired well with the over all concept. I started off by studying the border of Mexico to the U.S. and everything in-between as well as hints of personal experiences. This lead me to connecting the coronations between the collection of paintings, Mexico and U.S. -monuments.
Pulling inspiration from monuments, specifically the passing of immigrants in the Sonora Desert with no identification who are considered John/Jane Doe in the U.S. I designed a typeface called Karl Roman for the logo and headline system.
The base foundation of the serif derives from the tumbas (tombstones) and architect of the border. The caps height of the A in the logo extends over speaking to the separation of the country’s. Headlines are paired with a sans serif that was inspired by border patrol documents and toe tags from the deceased. The use of color stems from human remains, sirens, and dark cold night.
